A BRIEF HISTORY

Tauranga Primary School was the original school in Tauranga. Tauranga Primary School, as it is today, has arisen from a series of interesting happenings commencing with the establishment of a Missionary School in 1835 by Sarah Wade, the wife of the Rev. R. W. Wade. Initially a District High School, it was moved onto its current site about 1864 although the original buildings have now gone. In 1904 it became solely a primary school when the Boys’ and Girls’ Colleges opened.

Then followed a period of education in the Industrial and Agricultural Institute which alternately was a hospital and a combined teacher-residence school.

The Mission relinquished the ownership of the school in 1872 and moved to a new site, where it was known as the Opepe Memorial and District School.

Eventually in 1904 the school was moved to its present site and over the years has undergone various physical changes in buildings, playground equipment and ground improvements.

At this stage the school boasts a well-equipped library, computer suite, technology suite, swimming pool, adventure playgrounds and a hall, and all this amongst a setting of native and exotic trees.
